Inspiration came from the 'Night on Bald Mountain' sequence from the Disney film Fantasia from which the following still frames were taken.
For a halloween party in 2008 I created a costume featuring retractable mechanical wings. Others have created similar costumes and documented them on web pages (see links below). Here is my contribution.

I will post here images of sketches I made before commencing construction when I get around to scanning them.
The raw materials used were the remnants of a cheap camping shelter, a few bolts, and a couple of sheets. Construction took a few hours over a couple of evenings. I will post photographs of the bare skeleton when I get around to taking them.
Here are shots of the finished product. Note that I could still sit down thanks to the wings being mounted so as to allow them telescopic freedom to slide up and down my back.
